TWO FAT LADIES LOSE IT FOR MACS and the AECC

Julie Justice and Siobhan Tatton
Sponsored diet for ten weeks beginning 13
th June 2011

Julie Justice, the wife of the well known entertainer, Tony Justice, has decided to lose weight; obviously to benefit herself, health wise, as she has been struggling for some time with a thyroid condition.

Her inspiration for this decision is her close friend Ashlea.

Ashlea was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago and after numerous operations was told, three years ago, that her condition was terminal and she was unlikely to survive over six months, Through her sheer determination and courage, and of course chemotherapy, she is still with us and will not be beaten, much to the delight of the medical profession and family and friends.

Ashlea has been visiting Tony and Julie for a little respite once a month when her treatment has allowed. On her last visit, at the end of May, whilst chatting, Ashlea said she could not understand how Julie had gained so much weight when eating so little. She suggested a healthy eating plan and eating more regularly. That’s when Julie decided to take her advice and thought it would be great to coincide it to help raise funds for MACS and AECC, both of which are fully registered charities. We have all been touched by this dreadful disease through family friends and personal experiences, any support to raise funds would be very much appreciated by Siobahn and myself.

Siobahn Tatton formerly of Bar La Montana was approached by Julie to help with sponsors, and offered her  support by doing the diet together, Siobahn say’s "I think the fact is that everyone is scared of the word Cancer. The word alone makes people shudder. We have all known someone that has had it or has got it even died through it. I have a beautiful friend of mine that has fought Cancer for years. Every day we pray that Cancer Research will find other ways to help fight this terrible thing. And they do just that. Every Day they come up with something else and one day they will beat it as thousands of sufferers have done. We must carry on giving to Cancer Research Foundation so that they have the money to carry on investigating ways to stop it in its tracks. By Helping with Fund Raising Events we are helping to bring awareness to It and help them fight it. I am a great believer in "If we all stick together, we will win"

If anybody out there wants to help Julie and Siobahn, and these worthwhile charities please contact her by email on jujuentertainment@live.com and pledge your support. You can pledge an amount of money per kilo lost or just give a donation. Your support would be very much appreciated. Fiona Rooney, of the Euro Weekly has kindly agreed to be the treasurer.

ROYALS MEET BRITISH VOLUNTEERS

Macs were lucky to be invited to meet Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall who were on a three-day official visit to Spain. Their official hosts are the Prince and the Princess of Asturias.

High on a busy programme of events will be a reception at HM Ambassador’s Residence in Madrid, where the Royal couple will meet and thank some 300 representatives of the many thousands of Spanish and British volunteers who help to improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable British residents in Spain.

An estimated one million British citizens live in Spain for part or all of the year, and inevitably some of them face increasing financial and health problems. As well as the British Consulates in Spain, the British community is heavily dependent on a network of volunteer organisations to provide self-help.

Among the many volunteer organisations attending the reception will be Age Concern Acción Social , Age UK and The Royal British Legion, as well as representatives of Spanish local and regional authorities.

HM Ambassador Giles Paxman said: “I am delighted that the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are taking the opportunity to thank the many volunteers who selflessly give up their own time to improve the lives of others less fortunate than themselves.

“Although it is impossible for the Royal couple to meet everybody, their presence is a tribute to each and every person who helps our British residents.

“I want to add my own heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers. Their kindness and care is hugely valued and appreciated, and makes a big difference to many people’s lives.”

The Duchess of Cornwall will also be meeting leaders of the Barcelona group of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, of which she is Patron. Maggie’s is aiming to develop its first care centre outside the UK, and the meeting is an opportunity to raise the profile of the project.

MACS Cancer Support Group would like to thank one of our most generous and consistent fundraisers F.A.C.E Fundraising in Arboleas Caring for Everyone.

F.A.C.E in Albox continually raise funds for very well worthy causes and they are one of MACS largest supporters, who have helped us as a group offer people affected by cancer feel less alone and can improve their ability to deal with the uncertainties and challenges that cancer brings.

F.A.C.E  has also enabled us to provide much need help & specialised equipment during often very traumatic times.  We have been able to help people who are affected by cancer and undertaking treatments an opportunity to meet and discuss ways to cope.

In 2008 FACE contributed 3,900 euros to MACS and in 2009 3,000 euros.  They have helped MACS from the beginning and their continued support is invaluable.

A very BIG Thank you from the whole of the MACS Committee and it’s members.

LOS TERREROS  LADIES CLUB

A group of Ladies from San Juan Los Terreros originally started a slimming club and this soon developed into the “Terreros Ladies Club”.  The Ladies meet every Thursday for coffee mornings and arrange social events, dances, and more.

Once a year they put on a Carol Service and any proceeds collected are given to a charity.  This year the charity chosen was MACS Cancer Support Group.

The Carol Singing took place, in the run up to Christmas, on the terrace of La Venta Bar/Restaurant, which was packed with well-wishers.  For the first time the men joined the ladies choir and it turned out to be their best Carol Service ever.  Also the music was supplied by one of the husbands who plays the organ and the music was recorded onto a C.D. for the carol service which provided the background music to sing a long too.

The Ladies donated and collected raffle prizes, made a cake and they all brought food of mince pies & sausage rolls which were handed out during the Carol Singing.

A total of 500 euros was collected of which 300 euros came from the raffle prizes alone.   Here you can see Sue Clark & some of the ladies from Los Terreros presenting the total amount collected to Dave Brown from MACS.   Dave Brown thanked the  Terreros Ladies Club and said that donations like theirs is very much appreciated, and this enables MACS to continue in their work in helping cancer sufferers.

Thank you.

MONIKA’S BAR – PALOMARES BAJO

‘The Usual Suspects’ of Monika’s Bar in Palomares Bajo held a Christmas carol sing-along and charity auction and raffle in aid of MACS, on 23rd December 2009. The idea grew from our ‘Singing Chef’ singing a carol at the bar; which developed into a Christmas carol sing-along and then the possibility of raising 50 euros for MACS selling carol sheets, and from there, snowballed as people and businesses generously donated gifts and services – from a flying lesson to a computer tune-up, from a catered gourmet meal for 4 (which was won by a family in their touring caravan!) to a food hamper, from a Nao porcelain figurine to an original Indalo painting and much more - we had so many things, we decided to run a raffle as well as an auction and Monika, bountiful as ever, gave mulled wine, non-alcoholic Christmas punch and mince pies. About 120 people turned up, overflowing the bar onto the patio and creating a great atmosphere. We eventually raised an amazing 1332.30 euros! We wish to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed goods and services, everyone who bid and bought raffle tickets and everyone who rattled buckets and helped organise such a very successful and enjoyable evening. We hope to make this an annual event, so put it in your diaries for December 2010 !

MACS would like to say thank you to Monika’s bar and ‘The Usual Suspects’ for this fabulous donation which helps MACS continue to work and support cancer sufferers.

THREE KINGS - JANUARY 2010

MACS took part in the Three Kings procession in Mojacar on Wednesday 6th January.

It was a cold day, and the crowds started to gather early.  The Procession was lead by three kings on camels, distributing sweets much to the delight of the children, then followed by the Mojacar band and the MACS Cancer Support Awareness team lead by Fran & Geoff Cook, also helped by Val Hicks and Ann from the Merry Maidens in Mojacar.   We are sure nobody else can boast such a fantastic lead for their float!  Well done to all that took part.

MACS First venture with the Christmas Sleigh (SEE PICTURES IN PHOTO GALLERY)

Macs trailer, which is normally used for delivering and collecting equipment for Macs patients, was converted to a sleigh with Christmas lights and Christmas music playing.

Saturday night before Christmas MACS helpers and supporters rode all along the Playa, they surprised the staff at Mercadona when they parked outside, and went in as many bars and restaurants as they could, shaking their glittery buckets.

The Sleigh ended up at the Glad Rags Ball at the Kimrick, where everyone came out and had their photograph taken on the sleigh with Father Christmas.

Sunday we started off at lunchtime and had many requests for Father Christmas to get off the sleigh and greet the children.  MACS made sure that they had lots of sweets ready for him to hand out.  There was something magical about the surprise and awe with which the children acknowledged him.   People waved and shouted in English and Spanish as we rode along; drivers sounded their horns adding to the fun.

Many of the restaurants and bars we went in, again, wanted family pictures taken with Father Christmas.  He even had a wander round Parque Commercial, where we met up with a teeny, weeny Spanish boy, dressed as Father Christmas. More photographs were called for.

Sometimes we worried that we may be intruding, and always asked the venue managers if it was ok before we went in, but we were welcomed and felt we added an unexpected dimension to their Christmas festivities.

MACS would like to say a big thank you to all the bar and restaurant owners who welcomed us and allowed us to ask their guests to throw coins in the bucket.  Thanks to people in the Parque, outside Mercadona, and the Spanish and English friends who enabled us to raise some funds for the needs of Macs patients. It's a difficult time for many, but even more difficult for people suffering with cancer!

We, as the Macs Group, need to respond to people who come to us with needs, once they, or their loved one is diagnosed with cancer.  It is important that everyone knows how much MACS appreciate all that our friends in Mojacar and surrounding areas as they are aware that we need to raise monies to continue to give this valuable support to people who turn to Macs for support and friendship.

Thank you to everyone for making this first venture worthwhile:

q        The General Public for donating money into the buckets, no matter how large or small the        amount.

q        Restaurant and Bar Owners - Your support was invaluable!.

q        Spectrum radio for announcing the event

q        A special thanks to Rod Bridges who played a wonderful Father Christmas, singing as we went along, keeping the generator going, freezing on the Saturday night, and sweating his socks off Sunday in the sunshine  One thing his wife Ann said was,"At least he didn't need any padding to look authentic".

We raised 340 euros, so a big thank you to everyone who supported us.  Also we like to think that perhaps we provided a bit of Christmas Fun whilst we raised much needed money!

MACS Mojacar Area Cancer Support would like to announce that The
Fundraiser in Turre, with address at Avendia Almeria, 04639 Turre, is no
longer supporting or connected with MACS with immediate effect.

We wish to make clear to the members of the public that MACS will not
benefit financially or otherwise from the sale of any items sold or donated by the General Public to The Fundraiser.

We have decided to make this announcement in order not to mislead any
of the General Public into making any further donations of items to The
Fundraiser in the belief that monies are being donated to MACS when in
fact they are not.

Anyone concerned with his or her items left at the shop should retrieve or attempt to re-claim their goods directly from The Fundraiser.

We would also like to make it clear that the above is not related to the
previous management of The Fundraiser which was formerly Graham &
Pauline of the Word in Turre, who had, during their management of the
shop, donated to MACS.

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to state that MACS
appreciates all the help and support from the Public to date. We hope that you will continue to support us at official MACS fundraising events which enables the Group to provide much needed help & specialised equipment to sufferers of cancer.

Thank you for your understanding.
