My name is Fran Cook. I came to live in Mojacar with my husband Geoff 3 years ago.
Prompted by caring for my mom who developed Alzheimer’s in her early fifties, I began my career as a care assistant and progressed to qualifying in Social Work. During my last 12 years at work I managed a Health and Social Care Day Unit at Cannock Hospital in Staffordshire. It was for predominantly older people who could benefit from rehabilitation, but we endeavoured to support and enhance their emotional and social needs too, as well as those of any carers involved. I truly enjoyed my work and always reflected on the privileged position which allowed me to become close to people and their families, enabling them to access support and resources they felt could be beneficial.
It was a shock to learn that our friend, Elaine had been diagnosed with cancer. Elaine found there was no formal help and support outside of the hospital treatment she received. Elaine set up the MACS group, to ensure that others who found themselves in a similar situation, could access practical help and support, and often more importantly, be able to talk to a friendly person who understands what you are going through.
I hope I can be of assistance to the group and to anyone who contacts MACS for help or support. AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING FORMULATED. I feel privileged to be included in this pioneering project. So many people will benefit from it in future years to come.
