A cancer diagnosis changes everything—not only for the person receiving the news, but for the people who love them. In an instant, life becomes a series of appointments, decisions, emotions, and uncertainties. During this time, having the right support can make all the difference.
MACS exists to walk alongside those facing cancer, offering practical help, emotional care, and a sense of community when it is needed most. We support individuals of all nationalities, recognising that in many areas, help beyond the hospital setting can be limited—especially for those navigating language barriers or unfamiliar systems.
We provide a wide range of services designed to ease the burden on patients and their families. Emotional wellbeing is at the heart of what we do, with counselling available not only for patients but also for their close family members. We understand that cancer affects entire households, and everyone deserves support.
For those facing financial strain, we offer assistance based on individual circumstances, helping to relieve some of the pressures that can accompany treatment. We also arrange transport to chemotherapy appointments, ensuring that no one has to face these journeys alone or in difficulty.
Practical, day-to-day support is just as important. From providing cleaners when needed, to supplying hospital equipment, wigs, and certain prosthetics, we aim to restore comfort, dignity, and a sense of normality wherever possible. Our buddy system connects patients with someone who understands their experience, offering companionship and reassurance during challenging times.
We also believe in the value of connection and shared understanding. Our monthly support group brings people together in a safe, welcoming space to talk, listen, and support one another. In addition, we offer access to alternative therapies, recognising that healing is not only physical, but emotional and holistic too.
Language should never be a barrier to receiving care. That is why we provide translators where needed, helping patients and families communicate clearly and confidently throughout their journey.
At our core, MACS is here to remind people that they are not alone. Through compassion, practical support, and a strong sense of community, we strive to bring comfort, hope, and strength to those navigating one of life’s most difficult paths.

Testimonials

CHRISTINE AND BOB IMAGE.JPG

Sent from my Testimonial in Memory of Christine

Losing my beloved wife Christine to cancer was the most difficult chapter of my life. Christine was an extraordinary woman—kind, compassionate, and full of strength even in the face of unimaginable challenges. She faced her illness with courage and grace, and her love never wavered, even in the darkest of times.

Throughout our journey, we were fortunate to have the unwavering support of MACS, our local cancer charity. From the moment we first reached out, the team at MACS treated us with empathy, dignity, and genuine care. They were more than just a charity—they became part of our extended family. Whether it was emotional support, practical help, or simply someone to talk to, MACS was always there for both of us.

In those moments when everything felt overwhelming, MACS gave us comfort. They helped Christine maintain her dignity and quality of life.

I will forever be grateful for everything MACS did for Christine and for me. Their compassion made a difference when it mattered most, and I know Christine would want others to benefit from the same kindness and care we received. They are truly a remarkable organization, and I cannot thank them enough.

— In loving memory of Christine

In 2016, just when I thought cancer was a chapter I’d already closed—after facing thyroid cancer years earlier—my world shifted once again. A scan revealed a suspicious lump in my breast, and the weeks that followed were a blur of appointments, biopsies, and fear. The diagnosis: stage 3c breast cancer. Within days, I was undergoing a mastectomy, followed by six months of chemotherapy and another six weeks of radiotherapy. It was relentless. But amidst the exhaustion and emotional turmoil, I found something truly life-changing: MACS.

MACS was there for me when I needed them most. Not just in the practical sense—although they did help me with wigs, turbans, mastectomy bras, invaluable hospital translation and explaining complex medical treatments—but in the way that truly mattered: they cared.

I was paired with a buddy through MACS, the incredible Elaine Brown, a true legend. She gave me her phone number and an open invitation to call her whenever I needed to talk. That simple act of kindness became a lifeline. Elaine, like everyone at MACS, understood not only the disease, but the emotional hurricane that comes with it.

My husband and I also began attending the monthly MACS Patient, Survivor and Carer meetings. These gatherings weren’t just support groups—they were a warm, welcoming space where people living with all types and stages of cancer came together over coffee, conversation, tears and laughter. They helped us find connection and strength when we felt our most vulnerable.

When my treatment ended, both my husband and I knew we wanted to give back to the charity that had given us so much. Our daughter led the way with a sponsored walk that raised funds for MACS, generously supported by her friends. In 2017, we were honoured to help open MACS’ 5th shop at Las Buganvillas—a proud day that reminded us how vital this charity is to the community.

Then, heartbreak struck again. My beloved husband Al passed away suddenly. In those darkest days, the MACSfamily who stood by me just as they always had. Even now, our family continues to give back. My granddaughters, Talia (20) and Mila (18), have both volunteered at the shop, proving that MACS’ work crosses generations and unites people of all ages and nationalities. Volunteering has brought us joy, new friendships, and a sense of purpose.

MACS is more than a charity, it’s a family. A lifeline. A place of comfort and compassion when the world feels overwhelming. My family and I will always be proud to be part of something so incredibly special. To everyone at MACS: thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You never fail to show up for those in need, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

"For 2 decades , my husband Tony and I have had the privilege of supporting MACS Area Cancer Support Group in Spain. Little did we know that one day we'd be on the receiving end of their exceptional care. After the passing of founder Elaine Kay Brown, her husband Dave and granddaughter Shannon, along with the dedicated MACS team, have continued to uphold her legacy with unwavering dedication. When we needed it most, MACS provided us with life-changing support. They supplied a medical bed and equipment for nearly a year, with a seamless installation process that was truly impressive. Their team went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed.

During Tony's final 3 weeks, MACS helped with a fully registered carer Ali to provide invaluable support. Theirkindness, compassion, and professionalism were a beacon of hope during an incredibly challenging time.I'm forever grateful for the support MACS provided. Their selfless work made a profound difference and I couldn'thave navigated this journey without them. MACS is more than just a charity – it's a family. We feel blessed to havebeen part of their community and to have received such exceptional help .Julie Justice .
